Types Of Current Transformers

Ago 9, 2024

Current transformer is a special type of transformer used in power systems to convert large currents into small currents for measurement, metering, and protection purposes. They are widely used in various power equipment and systems to achieve current measurement, protection, and monitoring. There are various types of current transformers, which can be classified into multiple types according to different classification standards. Here are some main classification methods and corresponding types:

1.Classified by purpose:

-Measurement current transformer: mainly used for measuring and measuring the magnitude of current in systems, requiring high accuracy and small errors.

-Protective current transformer: Mainly used for the protection of electrical equipment in power systems, it can quickly and accurately detect abnormal current situations, and quickly cut off power in case of faults, protecting equipment and personnel safety.

2.Classified by insulation medium:

-Dry type current transformer: Using air as the insulating medium, it usually has a simple structure and does not require oil or gas as the insulating material.

-Oil immersed current transformer: The transformer coil and iron core are immersed in insulating oil to improve insulation performance and heat dissipation capability.

-Cast Insulated Current Transformer: The transformer is cast into shape using epoxy resin or other insulating materials, which have good insulation performance and mechanical strength.

3.Classified by installation method:

-Penetrating current transformer: Directly passing through power lines, suitable for measuring or protecting high current circuits.

-Pillar type current transformer: usually installed on the busbar pillar, suitable for current measurement and protection of busbar systems.

-Sleeve type current transformer: installed inside the sleeve of electrical equipment, integrated with the equipment, mainly used for internal current measurement and protection of the equipment.

4.Classified by the number of turns per winding:

-Single turn current transformer: The primary winding has only one turn and is usually used for measuring and protecting high currents.

-Multi turn current transformer: The primary winding has multiple turns and is suitable for measuring and protecting small currents.

5.Classified by working principle:

-Electromagnetic current transformer: Based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, it is the most common type of current transformer.

-Optical current transformer: It uses optical principles (such as Faraday effect) to measure current, with high accuracy and anti-interference ability, but the cost is high and its application is currently limited.

6.Classified by the nature of secondary load:

-Inductive current transformer: The main load in the secondary circuit is the inductive coil, such as measuring instruments or relay coils.

-Impedance type current transformer: The main load in the secondary circuit is resistors or impedance components, such as ammeters or power factor meters.

With the continuous development of power technology, the types and technologies of current transformers are also constantly updated and improved to adapt to different application needs and scenarios.
