What Does Current Transformer Do?

Ago 9, 2024

Current Transformer (CT) is an important electrical component in the power system. Its main function is to convert the large current flowing in the power system into a smaller current for use in measurement, metering, and protection equipment. This conversion is achieved through the principle of electromagnetic induction, where the magnetic flux generated by the primary current in the iron core of the current transformer is induced into the secondary winding, resulting in a current proportional to the primary current on the secondary side.

Current transformers have the following main application areas in power systems:

1. Current measurement

By using a current transformer to convert high current into low current, and then connecting it to an ammeter for measurement, the monitoring of current in the power system can be achieved.

2. Energy metering

In an energy meter (such as an electricity meter), a current transformer is used in conjunction with a voltage transformer to convert high current and high voltage into low current and low voltage, which are supplied to the energy meter for measurement, achieving accurate measurement of electrical energy.

3. Relay protection

Current transformers are important components of various protection devices in power systems. When a short circuit or overload occurs in the power system, the current transformer can quickly sense the change in current and transmit this signal to the protection device, so that the protection device can quickly and accurately cut off the fault circuit, prevent the fault from expanding, and protect the safety of power equipment and systems.

4. Power system analysis

The data provided by current transformers can also be used for power system analysis, calculation, and control, such as power flow calculation, stability analysis, etc.

In addition, current transformers also have the function of isolating high and low voltage, allowing measurement and metering equipment to operate in a safe environment. Due to the crucial role of current transformers in the power system, the stability and accuracy of their performance are essential for the safe and reliable operation of the power system.

Overall, current transformers are an indispensable and important component of the power system, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the power system, and providing important data support for measurement, metering, protection, and analysis of the power system.
